In this day of "reduce, recycle, reuse" ... using up pieces of old jeans is a great way to reduce waste. I still have a hard time cutting up jeans that are useable, so save these projects for those jeans that are pretty well done and ready to be tossed!
What I have done.. is to cut out the back pockets of the jeans, cut right thru the seat of the jeans, as you want to form a pocket within the pocket. Leave a 4 inch piece of denim at the bottom of the pocket if you wish to have a fringe.
Cut the fringe into 1/4" strips up to the pocket, and then wash the pocket to trigger the fraying. (make sure to empty your lint traps after!).
Cut a piece of inside seam to make the hanger or use decorative cord of your choice. Sew it into the back of the pocket ready for hanging on the wall.
Paint with fabric paints, or applique, or use beads, or anything you want to decorate your pouch pocket, then hang it securely on the wall with decorative hooks, and use it for anything, fits small stuffies perfectly, or beanie babies, or odds and ends..
These make great gifts for young teens, and are a hit at craft shows. You could even make your pouch pocket plain, and sell them with beads, bits of fabric, or fabric paints as a kit for them to decorate themselves.. They look really cute as a grouping on a wall..
Useable crafts are a great way to make some extra money, and recycle at the same time... I painted a frog on mine, but you can do whatever your creative mind comes up with.. there is no limit to ideas!.. Why not make a few things and try your hand at selling online?.. If you need a supply of denim pockets, why not check out Ebay. Just click on the link below.
These types of projects are great for online sales, as they do not cost very much to mail.. and I have found personally that projects that can be shipped flat or quickly without damage sell the best... Get that brain thinking as you are about to throw out those old jeans!
