I have tried many different products for transferring images to all kinds of surfaces. There are transfer mediums you can get, some swear by hairspray and other horrible smelly chemicals, and then some simply use white glue and take hours rubbing the paper off with wet hands.
I came across this brilliant and yet easy way to transfer images to wood with a hot iron. Obviously, you have to be careful not to burn the wood or yourself, but this works well and especially for the black and white pictures I found. You can do this with colour ones, but the black and white look very rustic.
You need to get your picture copied using a laser printer, so best to take your picture to your local print shop and get it printed with their laser printer, and don't forget to use the mirror image if you have words you want to see.
Next have a very smooth wood surface. The smoother the better, so maybe use a wood box such as the one in the video for example. Then get yourself a good hot iron and make sure the steam is turned OFF. This is dry heat only.
In this video, he is using the transferred picture to take it another step and outline with a wood burning kit. You could just leave it the way it is, or paint it lightly. But the idea of the wood burning would add some dimension to your project.
You can get the plain wooden boxes online or at the local craft store if you want to create a keepsake box, or you could do this as wood wall art with a smooth piece of wood. Either way I really like the idea of using an iron to transfer the image. It is a much cleaner and quicker way.
Using the wood burning kit above can make some beautiful pictures as you can see above and too the right on wood. You could scan your own pictures or drawings onto the computer then get them printed using the laser printer then iron them onto wood and outline with the wood burning tool for some added depth and interest. This would make cool wood art.
