Felted wool is when you create your project from various wools with either knitting or crochet and then you wash it in very hot soapy water and rinse and dry. Once dried you will see that it has changed from a loose weave knitted look to an actual dense fabric that feels and looks like felt, hence the name. It can end up so tightly woven that you can cut it with scissors and not have it unravel.
But just how do you do this? how do you created felt wool projects to sell? The resulting fabric after using this method will give you great pieces for making heavy duty purses and bags and even oven mitts have been made after using this process.
Check out the video below to really understand the process.
You can do this by hand like in the video, or you can also use your washing machine. The trick to felting is you need all three processes, 100% wool, hot water and agitation for this to work. If you want to use the washing machine, then put your project in with towels or something else that will help to agitate it, as this creates the fibers.
You can actually find free patterns online for knitting projects that are designed to be felted as they usually are created larger than normal since shrinkage is part of the process. There are many projects that you can make and sell with felted fabrics and you can experiment with colours. You can try your hand at more intricate felted work such as purses and hats, or you can start with something easier such as bracelets.
Just remember to use 100% wool for this process to work its best. This is something a little different, and being different can sell.
