You can get really creative with denim squares and pieces. One of the best sellers I had was for a set of denim placemats.
I came up with the idea, when I was using decent placemats outside that got messy and didn't wash very well. I decided I wanted something that could stand up to outdoor abuse and could be thrown in the washer and the dryer and still looked good.
Step 1 - For these denim placemats, I used 6 denim squares cut using a template measuring 7 x 7 inches. (1/2 inch seam allowance gives a 6 x 6 finished square) I also cut one piece of cotton fabric the same size as finished denim piece.
Step 2 - I cut the squares from old denim jeans and then I did a finished seam on them, meaning right sides together when sewing. I then pressed open the seams on the back and then top stitched 1/4 inch away from the seam to help it lay flat al around each square and seam. Step 3 - With wrong sides together I sewed the front denim piece to the patterned cotton piece and then I clipped the outer seam to create fringe cutting through the denim and the cotton and then threw it in the washing machine to fuzzy up the edges.
Step 4 - This method gives a finished section for where your plate would sit and a fuzzy outer edge just for fun. These can be thrown in the washer and dryer anytime and are perfect for outdoors or for that rustic look when serving indoors.
These place mats are perfect for patio living as they wash super well!
You can get some really colorful fabrics online and since I love the lady bug theme here are some below to get you started.
