How to Make a Vintage Pillow From an Old Retro Shirt
Throw Pillows are really cool right now, and using vintage button up shirts are a great way to add whimsy to your space, or to sell. These become almost "one of a kind" when they are done and they are so easy and quick to make and look awesome.
If you don't make them too big then you can sell them online as they are pretty lightweight to send in the mail. I always use a pillow form, this way the pillow cover or sham can be washed and put back on by using the buttons.
Start by finding the pillow form size you want to use. The most common size is 16 x 16 but you can go 18 x 18. It does depend on the width of your shirt. So I have found it is best to not go any larger than 18 x 18.
You can get pillow forms at most craft store but you can also get them online with Amazon.
Once you have a stock of stuffed pillow forms, go looking for old vintage and retro shirts. You can go to vintage stores, or garage sales, or jumble sales. You will be surprised where you can find some really cool fabric shirts. As long as the buttons are in good shape and the part you will be using has no stains or tears then you can get these shirts for almost free especially if the sleeves or collars are worn as you won't need those.
Check out local thrift stores too. Or ask in your family or friends, especially if anyone is downsizing their closets and have old shirts from ions ago! This is such a simple way to create a cool one of a kind retro or vintage pillow that you can keep or sell. You could display them all together on a table or a bin and they will all carry the common theme of a button front. This makes it so much easier to sew. Check out the video below
What I really love about these styles of pillow shams or covers is that you can simply sew it all the way around and use the buttons to add or remove the pillow form. This makes them great sellers because customers always want to know how to wash a throw pillow that has no way of getting the form or stuffing out. This way the pillow cover can quickly be washed and these vintage pillows will last a long time.
Everyone loves one of a kind! Plus many of the retro shirts had really cool buttons. If you get the pillow forms online at Amazon, then find almost free shirts you can quickly make a profit with this type of craft.
